Kenny headed to Daytona early once again this year in order to run his dirt Modified at the Dirt Car Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park in addition to his Speed TV duties for the Budweiser Shootout at Daytona International Speedway. Kenny reports that the racing has been exciting, but that Mother Nature has had her say as well, with rain delaying events at both Volusia and DIS. “Daytona has been all about rain,” Kenny says. “Our first race on Tuesday, February 2 got rained out. Rain has but a damper on everything-we’ve been rained out here and one of the Sprint Cup practices at Daytona got rained out. The forecast has cleared and we hope to race Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday!”Kenny had a great first night at Volusia on Wednesday, qualifying for the A-Main and finishing fifth out of the 74 modifieds that came to race. Thursday did not go as smoothly for the team. Billy Smith, one of Kenny’s crew, qualified the car for the feature while Kenny was at Daytona taping the pole draw for the Budweiser Shootout. He reports, “Billy Smith did a great job and put the car in the field. But when I got in there, either we didn’t put a clip in the right rear spring, or it fell out, but there was no clip in the spring and it fell out. We were hoping to get in seven nights of racing, but now it looks like we’ll only get in five. We’re 11th in points out of 100 cars right now, and I’m really excited.”
Kenny has also been getting back into the swing of the television season, co-hosting the pole draw for the Budweiser shootout and the first Race Day of 2010. He says that Daytona is almost too quiet for the next few days. “TV has been going good,” says Kenny. “We had our first Race Day and it was good to see the cars on the track. It was a great race with Jeff Gordon and Greg Biffle going at it on the last lap. Now, the track is silent for three days. It’s first time in a long time the track has been this quiet-we used to have Daytona 500 qualifying and everybody getting ready for the IROC race, but now it’s silent.”
